Troubleshooting The Common Problems Of Your String Trimmer

by Enid - February 19th, 2015

Curved Shaft Trimmers

There are two types of string trimmers. These are gas powered and electric powered. Apart from the head, both these trimmers have different mechanics and maintenance techniques. Here, we review the major issues with the trimmers and methods to resolve them. The head is attached to the motor using a driveshaft, if there a problem in the shaft you will have to get it replaced by an authorized service center. The other parts can be repaired by using your DIY experience.

Gas Powered Trimmers

These are of two types, 2 stroke engine and 4 stroke engine trimmers. The 2 stroke trimmers need a particular quantity of oil to be mixed in gasoline. While 4 stroke engine runs on gasoline alone.

1. Starting Problem
The major cause of starting problems is the deposit of carbon or slug in the spark plugs. The plug might also get short circuited. You need to take out the plug, clean it and replace it. If there is no spark at all, you might need to replace the plug. Another major issue is that the motor needs to be checked for the engine oil. If there is a lack of oil, your engine might collapse.
When starting after a long time, there are two common problems.

• Oil Deposit
The engine oil loses its qualities over time, after its lifetime it might get sticky. So, when using the trimmer after a long time, check the engine oil before use.

• Carbon deposit on Spark Plug
There might be a carbon deposit on the spark plug. These deposits take away the property of the plug to produce spark in presence of current, creating starting problems in the engine.

2. Running Problems
After two or three months of storage, the gas in the trimmer expires. This creates huge running issues, so whenever you store the trimmer, make it run until it goes dry. This ensures a long life, but if you fail to do so and have a running problem. You would have to clean the fuel tank of the trimmer and fill in new fuel for proper operations.

3. Setting up the speed
There are screws to adjust the operational RPM’s of the engine. One screw is for idle speed and other is operational speed. Adjust both these speeds to their standard limits. The operational speed should be highest possible speed without balking and idle speed should be lowest possible without a hiccup.

Electric Powered

The electric type motors usually don’t have a problem. There are small issues like.

• Tripping of Circuit Breakers
• Cut in wires
• Improper connection of Terminals
• Discharged Batteries

These issues are taken care depending upon the situation and the type of trimmer. It is advised not to touch the wires or the trimmer motor while standing on a wet grass. In case everything is right, contact an authorized service center instead of a DIY experiment on your trimmer.

1. Trimmer Head Problems
There are two types of trimmer heads, the bump feed and the automatic feed trimmers. These trimmers have their own specific requirements of line thickness and wound. One has to pay attentions to these specifications of the head and adjust them properly. These are embossed on the trimmer head.

These were a few common problems of the trimmers and methods to resolve them. It is recommended to get authorized personnel for a repair instead of a DIY experiment if you are not well versed at successful DIY experiments.
